Dr Zappo - Hacksaw Gaming

Hacksaw has a habit of building a mechanic, watching it land, then finding another world to drop it into. The ricocheting beam that turned symbols into wild multipliers in Jaws of Justice was one of the studio's better inventions, and it clearly wasn't going to get used only once. Dr Zappo takes that same billiard-ball trickery out of the water and into a laboratory, wrapping it in cartoon absurdity and three separate bonus rounds. Veterans of the shark game will recognise every moving part within about ten seconds. Everyone else gets a genuinely entertaining mechanic they haven't seen yet.

Look and feel

The setting is the biggest departure. Instead of steel-plated sea life, you get a Futurama-adjacent street of scientific oddities - a Diagon Alley for eyeballs, essentially - before the action shifts to a crackling electrical set piece and finally the doctor's own lab. The art has personality, the palette is loud without being messy, and the whole thing builds anticipation for the zapping to come. Predictable underneath, charming on the surface.

Base game

Play sits on a 5x4 grid running 14 paylines.

EyeBall wilds

EyeBalls appear on the bottom row and fire in one of three directions - straight up, diagonally left, or diagonally right. Every paying symbol caught in the path becomes a wild, and some of those wilds arrive carrying an additive multiplier worth x2 up to x200. Beam an existing wild and it gains a multiplier; beam one that already has a value and the new number stacks on top. Once an EyeBall has fired, it settles into a wild itself. Any wild multipliers involved in the same win are totalled before being applied.

Energy Fields

Three panels sit along the left, top and right edges of the grid. A beam striking one at an angle deflects and carries on converting symbols in its new direction. A beam hitting one square on rebounds along its own path, adding multiplier values to the wilds it created on the way out. Beams colliding with other EyeBalls also add multipliers. This is where rounds get chaotic in the best way.

The three bonuses

Every round awards 10 free spins, with the trigger determining which version you land in.

• Eyeconic - 3 scatters. Base game rules, but EyeBalls appear far more often. Retriggers give +2 spins for 2 scatters, +4 for 3.
• No-Brainer - 4 scatters. Same as above, except every activated EyeBall now fires in two directions at once.

Verdict

Dr Zappo is skilled at concocting oddities in the lab but less so at concocting new gameplay. This is a reskin, plainly, and no volume of eyeball puns disguises that. The saving grace is that the original mechanic was excellent and hasn't lost its charge simply because the wrapper changed - watching a beam carom off three fields and paint half the grid wild is still one of the more satisfying things in this corner of the market.

The tweaks that do exist are worth noting. Volatility is gentler, which will suit players who prefer a longer grind over knife-edge swings. The buys are cheaper. Symbol values have been cut noticeably compared with the shark game, even though the headline RTP is fractionally higher. Max win sits at 10,000x, and the double-direction beams in the upper two bonuses are where you'll get there.

It's a fun game with real character and a mechanic that earns its repeat outing. It's also hard not to wish Hacksaw had added one genuine idea of its own rather than changing the paint. If you can look past the repetition, there's plenty of voltage left in the formula.
